KUMPTAS COTTON

A variety of G. Herbaceum, grown on large areas in the southern part of the Bombay Presidency and the northern districts of Mysore, also in the adjoining part of the Hyderabad State. Staple ⁷/₈-in. Lint 27 per cent. It has a yellow tint and is very leafy. Spins up to 22's/28's warp.

A mixture of Upland American (G. Hirsutum) and New Orleans (G. Mexican) types of American cotton, the former predominating. Acclimatised in southern part of the Dharwar district and in Northern Mysore. Slightly inferior to, but distinctly less leafy than Kumptas. So called because at one time it was largely saw-ginned, but is now mainly roller-ginned. Staple ³/₄-in. to ¹/₈-in. Ginning 30 per cent. It has been replaced to a great extent by Gadag No. 1
